Day 5 — Inside the Walled City

Today we spent the day exploring inside the walled city of Rothenberg ob der Tauber.

Our first stop was to walk along the wall above the city which was quite picturesque and where we made our first friends. As we were walking past, a German couple asked us to take their picture. They were celebrating their wedding anniversary at the same place they honeymooned 46 years ago, and they were trying to recreate a picture they took then. You can just tell how much love lives in their house. I love seeing marriages like that – such an inspirational start to the morning.

This is a very textbook, tourist town capitalizing on their historical looking city, but it has a cool atmosphere and some great food. Which is basically why all we did the rest of the day was eat… after changing into warmer clothes because it rained a good majority of the day sadly. Good thing all we wanted to do was eat.

Lunch consisted of a very large pretzel and apple strudel. My goal has been to find a pretzel the size of me and then eat it. This one was big, but I still think I can find bigger!

We then snacked on something called a Schneeballe, which roughly translates into “Snowball”. It’s basically deep fried pie crust strips rolled together covered in different toppings. We chose cinnamon sugar. These apparently originated in this area and there are bakeries that only sell schneeballes. While they were good, I’m not sure I get the craze.

After all those carbs, we took a short siesta before heading out to dinner at Gasthof Greifen. Dinner was the best I’ve had so far on this trip. I ordered a Schweineschnitzel served with pommes frites (french fries). This is basically a huge pork tenderloin…so good! Kevin ordered Chicken with red pepper sauce and rice which was also amazing. Oh and some beer, because when in Germany drink beer.

So much food we had to walk it off and went to explore the castle section of Rothenberg which was so peaceful compared to the bustle of the big tour groups herding through the center of town. We watched the sunset from the edge of the town over the rolling hills thinking about the couple celebrating 46 years of marriage. Our three years seems so short, but that same kind of love lives in our house too. We are gonna see 46, I just know it. (although I did the math recently… He’s been following me around for 11 years now!)

Heading back to our hotel, we grab ice cream (and you thought we were done eating!). In Kevin’s words, “I don’t know when I’ll ever see Green Apple ice cream again”.

Now we are off to bed as we have quite the adventure planned for the day. =)
