Day 3: Sun and Sand and Alcohol

We spent some more time on the beach today.  Grandpa has a favorite “bar” he likes to go to, so we have frequented it quite a bit.  He is actually headed there now with Anna.  Kevin and I are gonna sit this one out.  I use bar in quotes because it is actually just a 20ft x 20ft box that each corner is rented out to whoever wants it to serve alcohol.  It’s actually a pretty nice idea, and it is right on the beach so the view is spectacular.

Right before lunch we stopped and walked along the beach (although the water was cooler today, so my feet stayed out of it mostly).  Grandpa sat at his usual spot while Anna and Kevin and Cody (puppy) walked.  It was a beautiful day for it.  Once Kevin and I made it back to the table, Grandpa ordered me a shot of rum.  I have wanted to try it since the Dominican Republic is known for its rum, but man…that stuff is NASTY!  Grandpa wanted me to just take the whole shot, but Anna said to sip it.  Regardless, it was gross.  I’m sure my face was priceless when I tried it.  I couldn’t get the taste out of my mouth fast enough.  So I can check that one off my list as well.

Lunch time was right around the corner, so we headed over to the Walmart of the Dominican called La Sirena.  Above the grocery store is a restaurant that uses all the food from the store eliminating costs.  Kevin and I’s meal cost less than $7.00, and we were stuffed when we left with food left over.  If we had a little bit more experience with this type of buffet we would have cut our cost in half probably.  I accidentally left Kevin in the line by himself, and he had to fend for himself when the cashier asked him a question in Spanish…Oooops!  But he survived.

After we ate, we went downstairs to shop a little bit, and it is amazing the amount of Americans brands used.  We got a kick out the Farmland hotdogs that were there and had to take a picture…

We walked out with Doritos, Ritz crackers, and Pepsi…so the cashier saw us coming from a mile away!  Haha.  La Sirena is comparable to Kroger in that using the ‘card’ gets a discount.  This is the one time my Spanish has actually come in handy, because we didn’t know we needed a card.  And I actually asked the cashier if it was necessary or not, and that is when she told me it is more money without it.  So we quickly got Anna’s attention and used her card thankfully.  I wouldn’t have the slightest idea how to walk up to someone in line and ask for their ‘card’ without them thinking I was robbing them or something.  Like at Kroger if you forget your card, you just ask the person behind you to use theirs.  I was pretty darn proud of myself.  Seven years of Spanish hasn’t gone to complete waste!

We then headed home for the day.  Anna and I picked some fruit for Kevin and I to try.  We picked a limón (lemon) and two guayabas (guavas).  We saw the fruit picker in action!  Grandpa then had some el Presidente (The local beer that is 7% alcohol) delivered by a motoconcho.  It was the funniest thing ever…so I snuck a picture of the guy at the gate..

At the end of the night, we convinced Grandpa to take some pictures…Anna we didn’t have to convince at all.  She loves the camera.  So the next couple pictures are just some we took.

Cody finally let me be his friend!  He is only six months old and cute as can be.  He gets so excited and wags his tail like crazy.

Grandpa and Anna and I on the balcony outside Kevin and I’s room.  It’s a beautiful view.

Last but not least, Kevin and I

Tomorrow is a new day, and hopefully the weather cooperates with us so we can go on the teleférico…
