We’ve arrived in Ireland! I apologize for the nonsensical that may follow, exhaustion has set in. Flights were pretty uneventful, and we were able to doze through the long one. I say doze, because who can really sleep restfully on a plane. We picked up our car and that began a whole new adventure. Holy Irish drivers. Every vehicle looks beat up or has some type of damage, so it’s no wonder it is so expensive to rent a car here.
We were tired, but also wired when we landed, so we explored Bunratty which was on the way from the airport to Ennis. It turned out to be absolutely beautiful weather here, sunny mid-60s. It’s definitely a tourist trap with the Bunratty Castle (built in 1425, remodeled in the 60s) and the village surrounding it, but it was pretty neat. The people back then must have been very small though, because we had to duck through and squeeze through the stairwells. We did climb all the way to the top despite the many, many tedious spiral staircases.
Starting to wind down and ready to get the car unpacked, we headed to Ennis to our B&B. Very nice place with a very nice proprietor. Next step was finding lunch – 10 minute walk to Ennis town center and we come across a fast food place that is actually owned by Papa Johns. Very strange and not that great actually. By this time it had started to rain pretty good too (of course we do not have our rain jackets, because Kevin convinced me ‘we would be fine’). Never listening to him again! We were drowned rats by the time we returned to the B&B.
We have intentions of heading back out to go check out a local pub that is playing traditional Irish music this evening however I’m not sure we will be able to stay up too much longer even though the party will just be starting down there. But we can’t pass up the chance to experience it. Hopefully our little nap this afternoon will help us stay rejuvenated enough to not look like a really old married couple leaving 30 minutes after we arrive haha =)
